Shannon is an Irish name that has historically been used as a unisex name but has seen a decline in its usage for males in recent years. The name is derived from the Irish word Sionainn, which means “wise river” or “possessor of wisdom” and is associated with the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland.
In the United States, Shannon was first recorded as a male name in 1881 and gained popularity for both genders during the 1970s. At its peak, the name was the 317th most common name for males according to the 1990 Census. However, its popularity has significantly declined for boys since then, with the name not appearing in the top 1,000 for males since 2006. In contrast, it remains more common among females, ranking as high as 171st for girls in 2001.
Note that there are multiple decedents named “Shannon Johnson” in public records.
