At Least 13 People Dead After Mass Shooting in Thousands Oaks, Ventura County

Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a suspect is dead following multiple fatalities at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

Hundreds of students were reportedly attending a college night event at the bar when the shooting took place. Shots were reported as being fired at around 11:45 Pacific time.

Suspect appears to have used only one weapon — a large handgun; he had time to change clips. Witnesses say he was throwing “smoke grenades” / smoke bombs. They recall the suspect had facial hair, headwear, black jacket or coat, and prescription glasses.

UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old former Marine.

The killed deputy has been identified as Sgt. Ron Helus who had been on the force for 29 years and was considering retiring in the next year. He was the first to enter the nightclub after the shooting. His wife has been informed that he died a hero, entering the crime scene to save lives. “…hardworking… dedicated… totally committed… gave his all.”
