(L.A.) Kai Atkins, 37, Died at Men’s Central Jail

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 37-year-old Black male that occurred in jail.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Kai Atkins.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death: Fentanyl and Methamphetamine Toxicity

Other Significant Condition: Hypertensive Heart Disease

RIP KAI ATKINS (November 12, 1987 – January 15, 2025)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Wednesday at 9:20 p.m.

The decedent was found lifeless inside his cell at MCJ, which is located at 441 Bauchet Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Ruling by the deputy medical examiner was published on April 23, presumably after the results of tox screening had come back from the lab. This is considered an accidental, i.e., unintentional, drug overdose.

This is LASD’s third in-custody death for the year. 2025-003
