Authorities have identified Sean Griffin, 37, as the man shot and killed by police following an extended shootout through a North Hollywood neighborhood.
LAPD is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which occurred near a parking structure by a school and childcare center close to Victory Boulevard. According to police, Griffin had fired into an occupied vehicle before officers arrived, killing Joseph Tamburello, 32.
The incident began around 4:50 a.m. when officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Bellingham Avenue. Witnesses told police that Griffin had fired into the vehicle, fatally wounding Tamburello.
When police arrived at the scene, they encountered Griffin armed with a firearm. He pointed the weapon at officers, prompting the first officer-involved shooting. Griffin fled on foot and was shot at again by responding officers after confronting them.
The chase ended when Griffin entered a nearby parking structure and again pointed his weapon at officers, leading to a third exchange of gunfire. Griffin was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police recovered a loaded firearm near Griffin, along with additional rounds on his person. No officers were injured during the incident, and it remains unclear whether Griffin fired any shots at police.
