RIP JERMAN MAGANA (February 19, 1994 – June 13, 2024)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Thursday at 9:19 p.m.

The decedent was fatally shot by deputies after allegedly firing shots at a sheriff’s helicopter from a Compton-area rooftop. He apared to have been under the influence.

Deputies had been called to the 14600 block of Cahita Avenue near Rosecrans Avenue — in an unincorporated area bordering Compton — at around 7:45 p.m. for a man armed with a shotgun in the backyard of a home. There were reports that the man had already fired shots.

Arriving deputies initially spotted the man in the rear yard, but he eventually made his way onto the roof.

Deputies ordered the suspect multiple times to surrender, but he refused to comply. A sheriff’s department helicopter arrived on scene.

LASD said that ultimately, four to six rounds were fired at the helicopter and that the airship was hit at least once.

With the suspect continuing to fire, two sheriff’s deputies on the ground opened fire at the suspect, who was struck. He was soon after pronounced dead at the scene.
