RIP JAZMYNE HA ENG (January 10, 1971 – January 4, 2012)

The decedent was of Cambodian descent. She was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies on a Wednesday in the 9300 block of East Valley Boulevard in Rosemead.

She had been suffering from schizophrenia and was seeking help at Asian Pacific Family Center. She was shot in the center’s lobby.

Deputies Brian Vance, who shot Eng, and Daniel Esqueda, Jeremiah Song and Allison Melendez said they feared for their safety because she was armed with a ball-peen hammer and that a Tazer they initially used on her was useless. It later turned out in the coroner’s report that she had not been hit at all by any Tazer dart.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors would later approve a $1.8 million settlement for her family.
