(L.A.) Herlyn Barrientos Funez, 47, Died at a Market

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 47-year-old Latino male that occurred at a market.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Herlyn Barrientos Funez of Huntington Park.

Manner of Death: Homicide

Cause of Death: Multiple Gunshot Wounds

The decedent was apparently chased by two suspects into a Superior Grocers store on 91st and Figueroa and then fatally shot.

Three members of the MS-13 gang in Los Angeles have been federally charged with the murder of Herlyn Barrientos, a fellow gang member who was cooperating as an FBI informant. Barrientos, a Honduran national known as “Doctorazo,” had been supplying methamphetamine to MS-13 members and began collaborating with the FBI after facing drug-trafficking charges in 2023.

Just before his death, Barrientos called his FBI handler to report seeing a man with a gun. The agent remained on the phone with Barrientos as he was shot to death, with gunshots audibly recorded during the call.

Surveillance footage and witness accounts revealed that three MS-13 members — Dennis Anaya Urias, Grevil Zelaya Santiago, and Roberto Carlos Aguilar — were involved. Aguilar, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, allegedly set the killing in motion after encountering Barrientos in the store.

The FBI affidavit states that the murder was ordered by higher-ranking MS-13 leaders as a “greenlight” hit, a common practice when a member is suspected of cooperating with law enforcement.

All three suspects are being held without bail and face federal charges of murder in aid of racketeering, which carries a mandatory life sentence and could result in the death penalty if convicted.
