Los Angeles County is reporting the death of an 18-year-old Latino male that occurred in a hospital.

The coroner’s office identified the young man as Hector Cruz Segura.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death A: Pulmonary Thromboemboli

Cause of Death B: Deep Vein Thrombosis

Cause of Death C: Effects of Nitrous Oxide

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Monday morning.

Ruling by the deputy medical examiner was published on November 15.

This is considered an accidental, i.e., unintentional, drug overdose.

Low-IQ people often use nitrous oxide recreationally, referring to it by slang terms such as “nozzie,” “noz,” “whippets,” and “laughing gas.” These terms describe the gas’s euphoric and dissociative effects, typically inhaled from small canisters originally intended for culinary or medical use. Despite its seemingly harmless and short-lived high, inhaling nitrous oxide is dangerous. Overuse or unsafe use leads to serious health risks, including oxygen deprivation, which may cause accidental death. Additionally, repeated or chronic use can cause clot-related deaths due to nitrous oxide’s effect on vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels, which increase the risk of blood clot formation. These clotting complications typically develop over days to weeks, potentially leading to fatal events like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. This risk of fatality from nitrous oxide misuse highlights that, while often seen as a party drug, it can have lethal consequences.
