Aspiration of a food bolus occurs when ingested food enters the airway instead of the esophagus, leading to potential respiratory complications. This condition is often associated with esophageal obstructions, which can be caused by anatomical abnormalities such as strictures, eosinophilic esophagitis, or foreign body ingestion.

The most common foods involved include meats, leading to a phenomenon colloquially referred to as “steakhouse syndrome” due to the difficulty in swallowing.

One type of choking incident that can cause death is called “café coronary” or “bolus death,” where individuals may suddenly collapse without prior signs of distress while eating or swallowing. Such cases can occur rapidly and are sometimes mistaken for cardiac events, making awareness and immediate response critical in preventing fatalities from choking incidents.
