RIP ANTHONY RIVERA (January 24, 1976 – September 25, 2024)
Formal pronouncement of death was made on Wednesday at 3:23 a.m.
The decedent was shot when a Metro bus was hijacked by 51-year-old Lamont Campbell at around 12:45 a.m.
It was near the intersection of Figueroa Street and Manchester Avenue in South L.A. where Campbell board and hijacked the bus.
Campbell held the bus driver at gunpoint, demanding to be driven throughout downtown L.A.
At some point, the hijacker shot the passenger identified as Rivera.
The bus driver, a long-time employee of the transit agency, activated a silent alarm and displayed emergency messages on the bus’s electronic sign to alert authorities.
LAPD initiated a slow-speed pursuit that lasted approximately an hour. Police deployed spike strips to puncture the bus’s tires, eventually bringing it to a stop near Alameda and 6th streets in DTLA.
SWAT officers surrounded the bus and used distraction techniques to apprehend Campbell after he barricaded himself inside. The driver managed to escape through a window during the standoff.
The driver and another passenger were treated for minor injuries but were released from medical care shortly thereafter.
Lamont Campbell was taken into custody and is being held on a murder charge with bail set at $2 million.
