Loperamide is over-the-counter medication primarily used to manage diarrhea. It is marketed under various brand names, most notably Imodium. High doses can lead to serious heart rhythm disturbances, including QT prolongation, which can be life-threatening. Loperamide has increasingly become a target for abuse, particularly among individuals dealing with opioid addiction. Users often take supratherapeutic doses to achieve euphoric effects or to alleviate withdrawal symptoms from opioids.
