When part of the heart muscle dies during a heart attack, the dead tissue weakens over the following days. In some cases, the weakened wall can literally tear or rupture under the pressure of the beating heart.
Post-infarction myocardial rupture happens most commonly 3–7 days after the heart attack, when the dead tissue is at its softest (before significant fibrosis/scarring has set in).
Using meth increases the risk of cardiac rupture by damaging and weakening the heart muscle, increasing the risk of heart attacks, causing dangerously high blood pressure and heart rate that place extra strain on the heart, and triggering inflammation that slows healing of damaged heart tissue.
