= LAXPD Narrative =

Just before 11:45 AM on 01/31/2026, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and Ventura County Fire Department responded to reports of a male subject firing rounds into the ground in the area of Walker Avenue and Dumetz Street. While units were en route, additional reports indicated that the suspect had shot an unidentified individual in the chest.

The suspect fled the scene in a red Chevy Trailblazer bearing Nevada license plates, later confirmed to be a Hertz rental vehicle.

Deputies searching the area located the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on the 101 Freeway near Dawson Drive. The driver failed to yield, prompting a pursuit that reached speeds of approximately 105 MPH.

During the pursuit, VCSO contacted Hertz, who was able to provide continuous GPS tracking of the vehicle. This allowed dispatch to relay updated locations even when deputies temporarily lost visual contact. The vehicle was eventually tracked to the area near LAX, specifically around Imperial Highway and South Inglewood Avenue. After LAPD and LAXPD located the vehicle, Hertz remotely disabled it. Responding VCSO deputies and assisting agencies then attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender.

After a 30–40 minute standoff, an LAXPD BearCat unit confirmed that the suspect appeared to have sustained an apparent self‑inflicted gunshot wound.
