(L.A.) Melissa Gomez, 21, Died at a Residence

Case Number: 2026-00696

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 21-year-old Hispanic female that occurred at her residence.

The coroner’s office identified the young woman as Melissa Gomez.

Manner of Death: Natural

Cause of Death: Ruptured Berry Aneurysm

RIP MELISSA GOMEZ (August 2, 2004 – January 13, 2026)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Tuesday.

A berry aneurysm is a tiny balloon-like bulge in a brain artery, usually where vessels branch, and it looks like a small berry on a stem.

That it ruptured means it burst and caused sudden bleeding around the brain. This kind of bleed is often deadly and can cause someone to collapse and die very quickly.

Rupture in someone so young is quite rare.

Pregnancy does put a lot of extra strain on the body though. A pregnant woman has much more blood, and the heart works harder. Blood pressure goes up, especially during labor and delivery. This extra force can stress weak spots in brain blood vessels.

Pregnancy hormones also change blood vessel walls. These hormones can make vessel walls softer and weaker for a while. If a small weak bulge is already there, it can break more easily.

After the baby is born, blood pressure can still go up and down a lot. Some women develop high blood pressure days or weeks later, even if the pregnancy seemed normal.

Pregnancy also changes how blood clots and how blood vessels react to inflammation. These changes can further weaken an aneurysm and make it more likely to rupture.
