RIP IQUIQUE VARGAS ( November 14, 2025)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Friday.

Iquique is a port city and commune in northern Chile, serving as the capital of both the Iquique Province and the Tarapacá Region. The name “Iquique” is believed to originate from the Aymara or Quechua languages, possibly meaning “dream,” “place of rest,” “sleep,” or “bed.”

Historically important for its mineral wealth, especially during the nitrate mining boom in the 19th century, Iquique has been under Peruvian, Bolivian, and now Chilean control after the War of the Pacific (1879–1883). Today, it is known for its coastal location on the Pacific Ocean, sandy beaches, commerce including a free trade zone, and cultural history.
