RIP WILFRIDO GUTIERREZ ( October 27, 2025)
Formal pronouncement of death was made on Monday.
The Department of Medical Examiner publicly disclosed the CoD ruling in mid-December.
Pulmonary thromboembolism occurs when a blood clot blocks pulmonary arteries, impairing lung blood flow and straining the right heart ventricle, which is the primary mechanism of fatality. It accounts for roughly 15% of postoperative deaths, especially after major surgeries.
Recent nephrectomy, or kidney removal, heightens thromboembolism risk through factors like immobilization, surgery duration, and inflammation in the postoperative state. This “postoperative state” directly contributes to clot formation, with pulmonary thromboembolism reported as a rare but documented complication post-nephrectomy, occurring in about 0.5% of cases.
