(L.A.) Roger Nielsen Jr., 34, Died in a Hospital

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 34-year-old male that occurred in a hospital.

The coroner’s office identified the man as Roger Nielsen Jr and listed his race/ethnicity as Latino [sic].

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death: Acute Methamphetamine Intoxication

Other Significant Conditions: Recent Physical Restraint and Less-Lethal Impact; Blunt-Force Soft-Tissue Injuries (Non-Lethal)

RIP ROGER JOHN NIELSEN (1990 – September 16, 2025)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Tuesday.

The incident began at around 2:30 a.m. in San Pedro. LAPD responded to a call about a robbery in progress at a convenience store in the 700 block of West Channel Street.

Upon police arrival, the suspect picked up a piece of plexiglass from a sign he had damaged.

He was immediately shot with a 40mm less-lethal launcher in the upper torso. He was then pushed to the ground and placed face down.

This was categorized as a “Non-Categorical Use of Force (NCUOF).” At some point while under arrest, the suspect experienced medical distress.

Paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he expired.

The decedent had many previous arrests for public intoxication. He may have been partly of Native American or Alaskan descent.
