Diabetes mellitus is a well-established risk factor for severe and invasive infections due to Klebsiella pneumoniae. Diabetic patients have increased susceptibility to K. pneumoniae colonization and infection, and high blood glucose levels enhance the bacterium’s virulence, making infections more severe and harder to control. This increased pathogenicity leads to higher rates of sepsis and invasive syndromes, as well as greater risk of complications like multiple organ failure.
Acute Suppurative Otitis Media, though usually a localized infection, can become a source of severe systemic infection -— especially in immunocompromised individuals such as those with diabetes. If the infection is caused by a virulent organism like K. pneumoniae, it can rapidly progress to sepsis and multiple organ failure.
