Alcoholism is a well-established cause of heart muscle disease, specifically alcoholic cardiomyopathy, which can lead directly to congestive heart failure.
Alcohol abuse can independently cause both liver cirrhosis and heart failure, and the presence of one condition can exacerbate the other. For most people, it takes at least 10 years of heavy drinking to progress from fatty liver and alcoholic hepatitis to cirrhosis.
