The Department of Medical Examiner publicly disclosed the CoD ruling on September 8.

Hemoperitoneum is a medical condition characterized by the presence of blood in the peritoneal cavity, which is the space within the abdomen that contains the intestines, stomach, and other organs.

A ruptured small bowel can lead to both hemoperitoneum and lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. When the small bowel ruptures, it creates an opening in the intestinal wall. This breach allows blood from damaged blood vessels in the bowel wall to leak into the peritoneal cavity, resulting in hemoperitoneum. The same rupture can also cause blood to flow into the lumen (inner space) of the intestine, potentially leading to a lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage, which is bleeding from the lower part of the digestive tract. This dual bleeding – into the abdominal cavity and into the intestinal tract – makes a ruptured small bowel a life-threatening condition.
