Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 32-year-old Latino male that occurred at his residence.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Elias Lopez.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death A: Mitral Valve Endocarditis

Cause of Death B: Intravenous Drug Use

Other Significant Condition: Recent Cocaine Use

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Tuesday at 9:33 a.m.

Ruling by the deputy medical examiner was published on August 13.

This is considered an accidental, i.e., unintentional, drug overdose.

Infective endocarditis is a significant medical complication associated with intravenous drug use, particularly affecting the mitral valve among other cardiac structures. The condition arises when bacteria or fungi enter the bloodstream and infect the heart lining or valves, leading to severe health consequences, including heart failure, sepsis, and death.

When individuals use non-sterile syringes or share injection equipment, they expose themselves to skin flora and environmental pathogens.
