(L.A.) Andres Guardado Pineda, 18, Died in a Driveway

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 18-year-old Latin American male that occurred in a driveway.

The coroner’s office identified the young man as Andres Guardado Pineda, resident of North Mariposa Avenue in the 90004.

Manner of Death: Homicide

Cause of Death: Multiple Gunshot Wounds

The decedent was fatally shot five times in the back by an LASD deputy near Gardena. The officer was later identified as Miguel Vega.

An inquest was conducted by retired California Court of Appeals Justice Candace D. Cooper in November 2020, the first inquest in L.A. County in more than 30 years.

In November 2022, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors approved an $8 million settlement to be paid to Guardado’s family.

In 2023, Vega was sentenced to two years in federal prison for depriving a 23-year-old man of his civil rights in 2020 by falsely imprisoning him and then trying to cover it up, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Vega pleaded guilty in September to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law in connection with the case.
