(L.A.) Omar Abrego, 37, Died in a Hospital

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 37-year-old Latin American male that occurred in a hospital.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Omar Abrego.

Manner of Death: Homicide

Cause of Death: Effects of Cocaine

Other Significant Condition: Physical and Emotional Duress while Taken into Custody

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Sunday at 5:20 a.m.

There was a security hold on this decedent’s autopsy because of LAPD involvement in his death.

Cocaine overdose by itself is usually classified as an accidental death (as opposed to natural, suicide or homicide).

This case can be referenced when discussing George Floyd’s manner of death. Floyd’s autopsy listed fentanyl, meth, caffeine and other drugs in the toxicology report, as well as marked signs of heart disease. His death was classified as a homicide.
