Maternal overlay during co-sleeping refers to a situation where an infant sleeping in the same bed as a parent, typically the mother, dies due to suffocation caused by the parent unintentionally rolling onto or covering the infant, resulting in positional asphyxia and death. This cause of death is part of a spectrum of sleep-related infant fatalities that occur in unsafe sleep environments, especially when sharing adult beds.
Out of over 160,000 death records made public by the county’s medical examiner since 1999, adult overlay has been mentioned about only a dozen times in a child’s death.
