RIP JERMAINE PETIT (August 20, 1982 – August 4, 2024)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Sunday at 1:50 p.m.

The decedent’s body was found on August 4. It was obvious he had been deceased for quite some time.

It was on July 18, 2022, that LAPD sergeant Brett Hayhoe shot Jermaine Petit after mistaking a car part the man was carrying for a gun.

The case garnered attention after a police spokesman at a news conference the night of the shooting said Petit had been carrying a “weapon” and then Police Chief Michel Moore walked back the claim the following day, saying Petit was holding the car part.

The decedent was described as being mentally ill at the time. According to family, Petit was a U.S. Air Force veteran who had battled post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. While in the military, he had worked in a medical facility tending to gravely wounded soldiers.
