Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the principal psychoactive compound found in marijuana. It is responsible for the majority of marijuana’s psychological effects, acting on cannabinoid receptors in the brain that influence various functions such as memory, pleasure, coordination, and time perception. When consumed, THC can induce feelings of euphoria and relaxation, but it may also lead to anxiety or paranoia in some users.
