Shooting at YouTube HQ in Northern California, Female Suspect Dead at Scene

UPDATE: The shooter has been identified as Nasim Aghdam, a PETA activist of Iranian / Persian descent. She posted videos to her YouTube channel, and was upset when YouTube demonetized it and censored her work.

Investigators on Wednesday said they believed YouTube’s policies had motivated a woman who shot three people at YouTube’s headquarters in San Bruno, Calif., before killing herself.

TUESDAY’s REPORT:

A female suspect used a handgun to shoot people at YouTube headquarters in Northern California Tuesday afternoon. She died on scene via a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found near her body. At least one victim is at the hospital with critical injuries; there are three others in more stable condition.

The cause appears to be unrelated to terrorism, but rather a domestic dispute.

Tweets began to emerge Tuesday afternoon from YouTube employees inside the building that an active shooter was on the campus.

Police tweeted about the incident on Tuesday afternoon, warning people to stay away from the area.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, operates out of San Bruno, a suburb of San Francisco that is about 10 miles from the city. The company has several hundred employees but it is unclear how many of them are based out of the headquarters as YouTube also has large operations in Los Angeles and New York.

Employees began to tweet about the incident on Tuesday afternoon. Vadim Lavruski, whose Twitter bio says he works in product at YouTube, tweeted at 12:57 p.m. PT that he heard shots and saw people running. About 20 minutes later, he tweeted that he had been evacuated.
