Yet Another Journalist Dies Unexpectedly at Middle Age 💉

The deputy foreign editor of The Irish Times, David McKechnie, has died unexpectedly.

McKechnie, aged 45, fell ill last week and was brought to the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where he died on Tuesday afternoon.

Paying tribute, Times Editor Paul O’Neill said: “As deputy foreign editor, Dave helped to make The Irish Times what it is, not least in recent weeks when he played a leading part in overseeing coverage of events in Ukraine. He was hugely invested in the role, combining his deep interest in world affairs with an inquiring mind, attention to detail and a strong work ethic.

“He was known for his warm and understated demeanour and his calm and measured approach which endeared him to colleagues, many of whom became his friends. His loss is deeply felt by all in The Irish Times. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Lilian, and his family.”

In December 2021, Carlos Tejada, the deputy Asia editor of The New York Times, died of a heart attack a day after receiving Moderna booster in South Korea. He was 49.

In November 2021, Petra Mayer, books editor at NPR, died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism. She was 46.

Also in November 2021, WEMU Detroit reporter and radio host Lisa Barry died unexpectely from heart complications. She was 62.

In June 2021, journalist Ayesha Faines suffered a fatal anaphylactic reaction. She was 35.

In May 2021, BBC presenter Lisa Shaw died due to complications from the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. She was 44.

In April 2021, MSNBC analyst Midwin Charles died unexpectedly at age 47.

Also in April 2021, journalist Rohit Sardana passed away from a heart attack. He was 41.

In February 2021, WNBC New York reporter Katherine Creag died unexpectedly at 47 within days of receiving a COVID shot.

Also in February 2021, ESPN baseball reporter Pedro Gomez died from a sudden cardiac arrest at age 58.
