At least 40 people are dead and 20 seriously injured in a shooting attack on a mosque and an Islamic center in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Part of the gunman’s preparations was writing on bullet clips that he would use in the attack. Photos circulating on social media show letters and numbers from the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. The words and dates are related to places, persons and battles associated with violent conflict throughout history between Christians in their homelands and Moslem invaders and African migrants. Update: The shooter has been identified by name as Brenton Tarrant. He left behind a 70-page manifesto clearly explaining his motives.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said she was “shocked beyond words” by the shootings.”I would never have expected anything like this to happen in Christchurch, I’d never expect this to happen in New Zealand,” she said.

Worshippers at both the Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch and the Linwood Mosque were the victims. The attack occurred on a Friday afternoon when the mosque was packed for the weekly congregation.

The Quebec City mosque shooting was a terrorist attack and mass shooting on the evening of January 29, 2017. Alexandre Bissonnette was sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole for 40 years.

Luca Traini is the name of an Italian man who opened fire on six African migrants in Macerate in 2018. Traini committed the two-hour rampage in retaliation for the gruesome slaying of a teenager a few days earlier. A Nigerian man was arrested in the death of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro. Her remains were found in two suitcases days after she walked away from a drug rehab community.

Rotherham is the name of an English town where organized child sexual abuse occured over decades. The abuse included gang rapes, most of which were reportedly carried out by Muslim immigrants.

Sebastiano Venier was Doge of Venice from 11 June 1577 to 3 March 1578. He is best remembered in his role as the Venetian admiral at the Battle of Lepanto, in which the Ottoman Empire was defeated.

The Battle of Shipka Pass consisted of four battles that were fought between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire for control over the vital Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878).

Novak Vujošević from Kuči tribe was the Christian hero at the Battle of Fundina, during which he killed 28 enemy soldiers. The Battle of Fundina took place in 1876 in a village in Kuči, Principality of Montenegro. The Montenegrin Army had about 5,000 troops. The Muslim Ottomans had 40,000 troops.

Bajo Pivljanin was a 17th-century commander in the Ottoman territories of Herzegovina and southern Dalmatia. Born in Piva, at the time under the control of the Ottoman Empire, he was a victim of Ottoman injustice. Regarded as one of the most distinguished freedom fighters of his time, he is praised in Serbian epic poetry.
