AOC Mixes Up Economists, Doesn’t Know How To Pronounce “Keynes”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who boasts of graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Boston College, had to correct herself Saturday after comically mixing up the names of two economists belonging to very different schools of thought.

During an Instagram Live discussion, Ocasio-Cortez flubbed the name of John Maynard Keynes, replacing his given name with the first name of Milton Friedman.

I was just reading these days about how in 1930, famed economist Milton Keynes predicted that by 2030 GDP and engineering would have innovative so a great deal that it would allow for every day people to perform as minor as FIFTEEN Several hours a week and present for their families,” Ocasio-Cortez said while talking with her Instagram followers about the possibility of a four-day work week.

Coincidentally, there is a town in the United Kingdom called “Milton Keynes” which was mentioned in a BBC comedy skit 40 years ago, presaging her mistake.

“UGGGH TYPO,” the freshman congresswoman wrote to explain her mistake.

“It’s John Maynard Keynes,” she clarified in a later on Instagram story. “Mixed his title with Milton Friedman — a (quite) unique economist.”

Many are asking how one could earn a degree in economics without having heard how to properly pronounce “Keynes” or “Keynesian” — aside from class lectures and peer discussions, surely a student majoring in economics has heard it pronounced in mass media or on YouTube at some point?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated on July 13, 2018, in an interview on PBS’ “Firing Line”:

“Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs. Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their family.”
