Husband of Wyoming State Senator Dies from Cardiac Event While Biking

The retired longtime Forest Service ranger — and husband of State Sen. Wendy Schuler — was found dead Monday morning. He was 64.

Rick Schuler of Wyoming, husband of Wendy

Rick Schuler was on a bike trail inside Bear River State Park in Evanston.

The Uinta County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a 10:19 a.m. call that an unresponsive man had been found at the park next to a bicycle on the trail system located on the southeast side of the park. First responders were unable to resuscitate him.

A Facebook post by Josh Walker, Schuler’s nephew, indicated Schuler experienced a “cardiac event.”

Schuler graduated from Bondurant Farrar High School in Iowa. He was active in football, basketball and track, and was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He was recruited to play football at the University of Northern Iowa. He then transferred to Utah State University where he played football and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management in 1980.

After graduation, he met and married Wendy Davis. They married in 1982. At that time she was teaching physical education at Lyman High School.

Rick was employed by the Forest Service and eventually became the District Ranger working and managing the Wasatch Cache National Forest. After 40 years of service, he retired on Dec. 31, 2020.

He and his wife Wendy celebrated their 40th anniversary on July 31st. They have four children and three grandchildren.

Some of his favorite outdoor pastimes with family included camping, golfing, boating, skiing, hunting, snowmachining, pickleball and mountain biking.

Schuler was a member of the Alliance Church, where he served as a deacon.

RIP Rick D. Schuler (September 24, 1957 – August 1, 2022)
