Conor McGregor Tweets He’s Retiring from MMA… He’s Joking… Right?

UFC star Conor McGregor suddenly started trending on Twitter late Monday night a little after ten o’clock Pacific time, and it wasn’t because he was a guest on Jimmy Fallon’s show.

The Irish superstar tweeted that he was making a quick announcement… namely that he has decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art.”

Though his Twitter followers assumed at first that it was just another one of CM’s jokes/pranks, the mainstream news sites and sports blogs decided to run with the story, and now his fans are not sure what to make of it.

McGregor did have a relatively tough past 12 months, losing miserably at a comeback MMA bout in October and then being arrested in Florida just a few weeks ago, days after completing community service for the violent bus incident that happened in New York in April of last year.

Furthermore, McGregor is now a family man with another newborn infant and enough millions in the bank from his fight with Floyd Mayweather that he doesn’t really need to subject his body to any more battering. He also has been busy with a flourishing new business selling his Proper 12 whiskey.

* Nope, no announcement on his Instagram. This was his latest IG post from about an hour before his tweet.

We all may need to wait for him to sober up from tonight’s libations and have him put out a clearer statement in the light of day.
